Dead Horse Point Spring Elopement Story
A Spring Elopement in Moab’s Desert Landscape
Why They Chose a Spring Elopement at Dead Horse Point
Shannon + Cole first traveled to Utah on a trip and quickly fell in love with the desert landscape and the kind of adventure it invites. When it came time to get married, they knew they wanted to return not just for the scenery, but to share this place with their family. A spring elopement in Moab felt like the perfect blend of meaningful and adventurous. It allowed them to revisit a region they loved while exploring somewhere new together. First Look in the Iconic National Park
A Surprise During Their First Look
Their elopement day began with a first look in Arches National Park. Cole stood beside a towering red rock formation, anticipation written all over his face. As Shannon approached and tapped his shoulder, he turned around with the biggest smile, taking in her sparkling dress against the red sandstone backdrop.
What Shannon didn’t know was that Cole had one more surprise planned. With the help of her sister, he secretly arranged for video coverage of their day. As Shannon read the letter explaining the gift, she realized we had been filming all along. There were happy tears all around. The kind of emotional start that sets the tone for a truly meaningful elopement day.
Exploring Arches with Snow-Capped La Sal Views
Because it was their first time visiting Arches National Park, we built in time to explore. Spring in the desert brought crisp air and snow still dusting the La Sal Mountains in the distance. A stunning contrast to the warm red rock formations surrounding us. We wandered beneath several arches, soaking in the scale of the landscape and giving them space to simply be together.
Under Canvas and a Just Married ATV Ride
From the park, we headed to Under Canvas, one of our favorite glamping stays near Moab. It served as their desert basecamp for the evening, blending comfort with adventure. Before heading to their ceremony, they hopped on the ATV they had rented for the week, a handmade “Just Married” sign tied to the back. Dust kicked up behind them as they laughed and rode through the desert. The perfect playful pause before saying their vows.
Sunset Ceremony with stunning vista views
Walking to the Canyon Overlook
Then it was time to get married. We made our way to Dead Horse Point State Park, where their family was gathered at their approved ceremony location. Spring at Dead Horse Point offers dramatic canyon views with softer desert temperatures, and this overlook was nothing short of breathtaking, with sheer cliffs dropping thousands of feet below.
Shannon’s mom helped her switch into ceremony shoes before she walked down the short trail to meet Cole. A close friend and fellow firefighter officiated, bringing personal insight and warmth to the ceremony. Surrounded by family, including their kids, they shared heartfelt vows as the sun slowly lowered over the canyon.
First Dance Over the Canyon
After sealing it with a kiss, they moved straight into their first dance. “Dressed Up in White” by CAL played softly as Shannon’s sparkled dress caught the desert light. It was a beautiful contrast. Her white gown glowing against the vast red canyon below.
As the sun dipped lower, their family surrounded them in hugs and congratulations. We explored a few favorite overlooks they had scouted the day before, something I always love when couples do. It turns the evening before into a date night and makes the ceremony day feel even more intentional.
The golden light lingered until the sky finally softened into blue hour.
Signing the Marriage License at Golden Hour
Officially Married at Dead Horse Point
As we returned to the cars, two family members signed their marriage license as witnesses. Just like that, they were officially married. But the celebration wasn’t over. They headed into town for dinner in Moab with their guests, continuing the celebration late into the evening.
For the rest of the week, they planned to explore more of Utah together, turning their wedding into a full desert adventure. A Dead Horse Point spring elopement story that began with arches, moved into sunset vows, and was steady with canyon views felt like the perfect way to start their marriage.
