Appenzell Switzerland Elopement: A Stunning Mountain Wedding Experience

A portrait of a couple in Appenzell, Switzerland.

Why Choose an Appenzell Switzerland Elopement?

Appenzell, Switzerland is one of the most breathtaking places in the world to elope. A region filled with dramatic ridgelines, peaceful meadows, crystal-clear alpine lakes, and iconic Swiss charm. For couples dreaming of a Switzerland elopement with sweeping mountain views, quiet trails, and unforgettable experiences, an Appenzell Switzerland elopement offers everything: adventure, serenity, and incredible scenery at every turn.

Joey and Kyle knew they wanted to elope somewhere that would offer them a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They wanted to include hiking during their elopement for sure, but also an element of water to offer serenity. In the past, some of their favorite travels included adventures like bungee jumping, so they liked that Switzerland had to offer paragliding and mountain roller coasters!

An option with dark skies was important to them as well to get to see and be photographed under the milky way. Many couples choose an Appenzell Switzerland elopement because the region offers accessible hiking, incredible sunrise and sunset light, and some of the most dramatic ridgelines in the entire Swiss Alps.

When we initially started planning for Switzerland, they were drawn to places like Stoos Ridge, Oeschinensee, Fronalpstock, Saxer Lücke, Schäfler Ridge, Hardergrat, and Oberbauenstock. Some of these places they got to explore during their honeymoon after the elopement! One we chose for the actual elopement 🙂

Overall, Switzerland checked all the boxes for what Joey + Kyle were looking for in an elopement from the adventure, the overall feeling of the experience, and what they could get from a photography perspective.

After photographing, helping them plan, and spending our own time exploring the depths of Switzerland, we are 100% convinced it is one of the top 4 places to elope in the world! We were blown away by the incredible mountain, glacier views. Seeing the wildlife and cows brings so much joy to your day – I promise. The people are so friendly and there is SO much to see and do!

Getting Ready in Appenzell: A Peaceful Start to Your Switzerland Elopement

Joey + Kyle arrived to their elopement destination the day of their elopement, seeing everything for the first time with fresh eyes. Really setting the wow factor for the elopement experience. They stayed at and got ready at their hotel in Appenzell, Hofweissbad. Joey’s hair and make up artist came to the hotel to do all of her glam as she sat by the open window, admiring the view and listening to the rain.

Joey + Kyle chose to share a first look before setting out for their adventures in the garden of the hotel. With fresh rain the flowers smelt so good and the gardens were quiet, creating a romantic private setting.

Where Is Appenzell? The Perfect Base for Your Switzerland Elopement

Appenzell is located in northeastern Switzerland near the Austrian border, surrounded by rolling green pastures, rugged limestone mountains, and charming traditional villages. It’s easily accessible from Zurich (about 1.5 hours by car), which makes it a convenient starting point for your Switzerland elopement adventure. Joey and Kyle chose to fly to their elopement into Zurich so they could enjoy the city amenities after the long travel and see an F-1 race.

Ebenalp Bahn: The Best Way to Access Your Appenzell Elopement Location

To access their ceremony location, we needed to take the Ebenalp Bahn cable car up the mountain. This saved us a lot of elevation and miles to access the stunning higher ridges of the area.

Once we were off the cable car, the fun began! We took our time taking in the views before starting the hike. The trail took us through local farms where we got to see goats, cows, dogs, and more. We also saw an Ibex quickly moving through the meadows. The views getting better and better as we climbed our way up in elevation.

Eventually, we made it to the mountain hut, Schäfler, where you can stay the night on the mountain, use the restroom, or stop for a hot meal. Joey and Kyle just stopped for a quick break to relax and write their personal vows prior to their ceremony.

These huts were truly one of our favorite things about Switzerland. They could really come in handy if you want a two-day trekking elopement or if you want to get sunrise and sunset light without hiking down or up the mountain in the dark, or at all, because you can use the mountain gondolas during day time hours.

Appenzell Elopement Ceremony

Bill officiated Joey + Kyle’s elopement ceremony symbolically at a beautiful vista viewpoint around the soft, glowing sunset light. This ceremony spot on Ebenalp is one of the most iconic places for an Appenzell Switzerland elopement, offering sweeping views of the ridge line. During the ceremony, a butterfly stayed on Joey’s dress almost the entire time. Knowing her story and that her father was no longer earth side with us, it truly felt like he was there to celebrate this day with them.

They quietly shared their personal vows as Bill stepped away and they exchanged rings before ending their ceremony with a kiss and time to hold each other closely soaking in the moment, the views and time together. It felt as time completely stood still until they were ready to continue exploring.

Can You Legally Elope in Switzerland?

Yes, you can legally get married in Switzerland, even if you are not from Switzerland. You will find the proper paperwork and process for this here.

However, it is not an easy process, and official marriage ceremonies must be conducted in a church or the federal offices. The ceremony would be conducted in Italian, French, or German, so unless you speak one of those languages, you would need a translator, as well.

Be sure you are planning ahead! If you wish to get married legally in Switzerland, plan at least 8 weeks in advance to make sure you have time for the paperwork.

Typically, our recommendation to our couples is to get officially married before or after their elopement day abroad.

Hiking in Appenzell After the Ceremony: Views, Wildlife & Adventure

After the ceremony, we continued hiking the trail a little bit further to get even better views of the incredible rock features and rolling hills of the meadows below. Even if you ignored the DANGER signs posted along the trail, the hiker definitely gets your attention as the thin, narrow trail winds along the cliff edge with nothing below you.

They helped each other and took their time making their way to some of the beautiful views, enjoying every minute of their first hike in Switzerland, but also their first hike as husband and wife.

Since the Ebenalp Bahn stopped running earlier in the evening, we needed to hike the entire way back down the mountain back to our cars. There are several options to choose from as the trail system connects and intertwines, but we chose the shortest option since more summer storms were expected to roll in.

Along the way we passed many cows and several horses, another connection point and sign for Joey that her father was there with her in spirit, as he loved horses.

We unexpectedly adventured through a cave, a church tucked back along the mountainside side and more, making it a fun journey back. We were thrilled to see still the stars and the milky way a along our journey, even with thunder above.

Elopement Adventures at Lake Seealpsee in Appenzell

The next day, we met mid-morning to hike into Lake Seealpsee. Lake Seealpsee is one of the most famous locations for an Appenzell elopement — a peaceful alpine lake surrounded by towering peaks.

Kyle and Joey rented a rowboat from the hotel/restaurant on the lake for one hour. During this time they read letters from their friends and loved ones of congrats and filled with beautiful stories of their connections with their folks.

You could feel the love and joy in their letters, moving them each to happy tears at different points while reading the letters. This was so relaxing, beautiful, and peaceful with cow bells in the distance. A lovely way to ground and take time soaking in the elopement experience.

Before we started our hike back, they shared a yummy lunch with a view at Berggasthaus.

We began our hike down the very steep hill, saying hello to locals here and there. Just as we made it back into our cars, the rain began again! Cooling off the warm Summer day – just in time.

  • Spending the day with them felt like being with kindred spirits.

We cannot recommend Traci and Bill with Adventure & Vow enough! They helped us plan the most perfect, dreamy elopement in Switzerland — it was beautiful, serene, and truly felt like a fairytale from beginning to end (think – mountain peaks, alpine lake, “wild” horses, surprise caves & a hidden chapel).

From our very first call, we knew we’d found our match. Traci and Bill were endlessly patient, kind, and supportive throughout the entire process. They helped with everything — from location scouting and timeline planning to the little details we never would’ve thought of on our own. Their communication was always prompt and thoughtful, and they brought such a calm, confident energy to every interaction.

Even when we had to pivot due to last minute weather, Traci and Bill handled it seamlessly. They made sure everything still flowed perfectly, and their flexibility and professionalism gave us total peace of mind on such an important day.

And the photos…wow. We received 50 (!!!) incredible sneak peeks almost immediately, and every single one took our breath away. Their work speaks for itself — it is pure magic.

Beyond their talent and professionalism, Traci and Bill are simply wonderful humans. Spending the day with them felt like being with kindred spirits. We’re so grateful for their presence and can only hope our paths cross again on future adventures!

If you are wanting the perfect elopement, Adventure & Vow is the one.
